On January 28, 2012 LZFD was dispatched for an 81 y/o male having chest pain.
Upon arrival the patient informed the crew that he started having chest pressure earlier, which had resolved on its own. After dinner the patient’s chest pressure returned, at which time he also vomited and started having left arm pain.
While moving the patient to the ambulance, the patient stated that his chest pressure was again resolved, and then became unresponsive to the crew. Crewmembers identified that the patient’s heart rhythm went in to Ventricular Fibrillation (VF). CPR was initiated on the patient, and he was defibrillated two times. Patient had Return of Spontaneous Circulation (ROSC), and started to respond to the crew.
Upon arrival at the Emergency Department a cardiac alert was called, and the patient was transported to the cardiac cath lab. Assessment by the cath lab team, found that the pt had a 100% blockage of the circumflex artery. A stent was put in place by the cath lab team to open the vessel.
The patient was discharged from the hospital with NO neuro deficits.
This patient is alive today because of the excellent care you provided. He was in the right place at the right time!
